DOMESTIC DISABILITY DISCRIMINATION LAW AND THE UN CONVENTION ON THE RIGHTS OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (“CRPD” or “Convention”) was unprecedented in being negotiated in only two years. In addition, it was negotiated with the involvement of disabled people themselves (recalling the “nothing about us without us” slogan of the disability movement); it is the first UN treaty to be signed and ratified by the EU; and the first to contain provision for continuous national oversight of its workings (e.g.provisions contained within it requiring monitoring).
