Sir Patrick Elias is one of our finest judges in the field of employment law in recent times, following on from successful careers as Cambridge don and then barrister at 11KBW.
The Industrial Law Society is delighted to announce a one day event on Friday 28th March 2025, celebrating Sir Patrick’s career as judge, advocate, and scholar.
The workshop will be held at Selwyn College starting with coffee at 9.30am, with a celebration dinner at 7pm to follow at Queens’ College. The cost for the event is £100 for academics and £150 for practitioners.
The workshop will consist of papers reflecting on themes in employment law where Sir Patrick’s jurisprudence and scholarship has had an enduring influence: employment status and sham contracts, the employment contract, human rights at work, equal pay, discrimination law, the law of strikes and trade unions, enforcement and remedies, and the nature of judging and the judicial role in employment law. They continue to be highly relevant to current debates on the Employment Rights Bill.
The papers will be given by academics, with comments from practitioners and judges. We are particularly pleased to welcome Lord Sales, Sir Rabinder Singh, Lady Simler, and Sir Nicholas Underhill as judicial participants in the workshop. It is envisaged that the papers will be published in a special issue of the Industrial Law Journal.
